ASTEROIDS

DEFINITION

Asteroids are lumps of rocky debris that float around in the Solar System. Most are found in the main asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars.

REASONS TO VISIT

• See relics of the formation of the Solar System
• Some asteroids have carbon-bearing compounds and may have delivered organic, life forming chemicals to the early Earth
• In future, mining asteroids could provide raw materials for colonising space
